Country Lane occupies land that was known as Gubserville in the 1880s and 1890s — a small stagecoach, mail, and teamster stop along the road between West San José and Saratoga. Gubserville takes its name from Frank Gubser, a German immigrant who established a general store on Saratoga Avenue and became the settlement's first and only postmaster when the Gubserville post office opened on July 5, 1882. The community served travelers and the agricultural families whose orchards and vineyards surrounded it, including Jacob Graves, who cultivated 193 acres of apples, pears, cherries, prunes, and wine grapes on land now commemorated by Graves Avenue. Gubserville is recognized as California Historical Landmark #447.

The post office closed in 1897 as improved postal delivery reduced the need for stage stops, and the settlement faded. The broader area transitioned from orchards to suburban residential development during the late 1950s and early 1960s, with builders including Clarendon constructing the ranch-style homes that still define much of the neighborhood. Country Lane Elementary School became the community's anchor institution, lending the neighborhood its contemporary name.
