Coyote Valley stretches along the southernmost edge of San José where the Santa Clara Valley narrows between the Diablo Range and the Santa Cruz Mountains. The valley was ancestral land of the Amah Mutsun and Muwekma Ohlone peoples before Spanish colonization, and its rich agricultural soils attracted some of the first American settlers in the region. The Murphy family arrived in 1844, followed the next year by Captain William Fisher, an English-born rancher who married into the Californio community and established the cattle and wine operation that gave Fisher Creek and Fisher Flats their names. In 1882 the growing settlement along the stage route was formally recognized as the town of Coyote — named, by local account, for the large numbers of coyotes that inhabited the valley.

Through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Coyote Valley was recognized as producing agricultural land of exceptional quality, and was considered one of the birthplaces of the Santa Clara Valley's celebrated orchard economy. Decades of proposed large-scale development were ultimately defeated by community and environmental advocacy; in 2021 the San José City Council voted to designate North Coyote Valley for open space and agriculture, ending plans for urban expansion into the valley. Laguna Seca, the largest freshwater seasonal wetland in Santa Clara County, lies within North Coyote Valley.
