Neighborhood History
Crocker Amazon takes its name from two sources: the former land holdings of Charles Crocker — one of the "Big Four" who financed and built the Central Pacific Railroad in the 1860s — and Amazon Avenue, the commercial street that runs through the adjacent Excelsior District. Crocker's land holdings occupied the area south of Mission Street and Geneva Avenue, stretching toward what is now suburban Daly City. After Crocker's death, the land was gradually subdivided and developed into the working-class residential neighborhood that exists today, with winding streets that straddle the San Francisco–Daly City border and blend into Daly City's own Crocker neighborhood to the south.
Crocker-Amazon Park, on the neighborhood's northern edge, preserves the Crocker name and serves as the community's primary open green space, with four playgrounds and renovated soccer and baseball fields. Directly adjacent is McLaren Park, San Francisco's third-largest park, which provides additional trails, a golf course, and the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. The neighborhood retains a strong Filipino community as part of its broader demographic mix, and its architectural diversity — spanning Marina, Arts & Crafts, Victorian, Edwardian, and Mid-Century Modern styles — reflects its long development arc.
The railroad land that became Crocker Amazon is a chapter in San Francisco's history that MY-NHD apparel keeps in circulation.
