Cypress Village is a West Oakland neighborhood whose identity has been shaped since 1945 by the public housing development of the same name — one of the postwar housing projects built by the Oakland Housing Authority to address the severe shortage of affordable housing as defense workers and returning veterans flooded the East Bay after World War II. The neighborhood takes its name from the cypress trees that once characterized the West Oakland creekside terrain, and grew as a working-class residential community alongside the broader West Oakland industrial and port corridor. Cypress Village Park — the community green space at the heart of the development — serves as the neighborhood's primary outdoor gathering anchor. The West Oakland BART station on 7th Street, opened in 1972 as one of the original stations on the BART system, is the neighborhood's most significant transit anchor, connecting Cypress Village residents to the regional rail network and the economic opportunities of the broader Bay Area.
