Dearborn Park, along with the park, street, and old railroad station that share its name, honors General Henry Dearborn, Thomas Jefferson's Secretary of War and namesake of the 1803 Fort Dearborn garrison at the mouth of the Chicago River. The modern neighborhood rose from 51 acres of derelict railyards that ComEd president Thomas Ayers and a coalition of Chicago business and civic leaders acquired from Bears owner George Halas in the early 1970s, part of a broader "Chicago 21" plan to rebuild the South Loop.

Construction began in 1977, and by the end of 1986 roughly 2,000 residents called Dearborn Park I home; Dearborn Park II followed south of Roosevelt Road starting in 1988. Dearborn Station, the oldest train station still standing in Chicago, anchors the neighborhood's northern edge, and South Loop Elementary opened in 1988 to serve the growing community. Henry Dearborn Park itself, a shaded 1.25-acre green space with a fitness course, sits just south of the old Dearborn Street rail line.
