San Francisco's Design District occupies the blocks around Henry Adams Street south of Market, a district whose identity was forged from 19th-century industrial warehouses repurposed into the West Coast's premier hub for interior design. The area's large brick warehouse buildings — originally built for cold storage and building materials — sat in an industrial corridor alongside the rail yards of Brannan Street. The transformation began in earnest in the 1970s when developer Henry Adams acquired the Showplace and Galleria buildings and brought in the first professional design showrooms as tenants, recognizing that architects, designers, and builders needed a consolidated trade resource on the West Coast. The Galleria — assembled by Henry Adams from four adjacent brick buildings connected by a dramatic interior atrium — became the anchor of what grew into over 100 showrooms representing thousands of manufacturers.

The neighborhood's identity as a mixed-use creative district deepened over the following decades, with the Concourse exhibition hall on Brannan Street hosting major trade shows and the district attracting a constellation of design professionals, gallery spaces, and creative firms. Today the Design District functions as both a working trade hub and an evolving residential and arts neighborhood.
