Neighborhood History

Dolores Heights takes its name from its relationship to two of San Francisco's most enduring landmarks: Mission Dolores — San Francisco City Landmark #1, the adobe mission founded in 1776 by Franciscan friars that is the oldest intact structure in the city — and Dolores Street, the boulevard that runs north from the mission through Mission Dolores Park and up the hillside to the neighborhood above. The heights themselves form the elevated residential hillside south of Mission Dolores Park, rising above the park's southwestern edge with panoramic views of downtown San Francisco and the bay. The J-Church streetcar line, which began service in 1917, runs along the western border of Dolores Park and connects the neighborhood to downtown, reinforcing the transit corridor that shaped residential development on the hill.

The Dolores Heights Improvement Club, which led the campaign to have Dolores Heights designated as a Special Use District in the San Francisco Planning Code, has been an active civic presence since the late 1970s. The neighborhood's stairways — seven documented public stairways connecting the hillside streets — are among its most distinctive physical features, maintained by community volunteers as green garden corridors.

The mission-named heights and stairway gardens of Dolores Heights are the kind of layered San Francisco history that MY-NHD apparel is built to honor.
