Druid Hills was established as a planned residential suburb in 1908, originally developed on land once owned by John G. Johnson and purchased by Joel Hurt’s Kirkwood Land Company. The neighborhood’s design was master-planned by the Olmsted Brothers (successors of famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted) emphasizing park-like settings, curvilinear streets, large lots, and preserved natural topography. In 1908, the land was sold to a syndicate including Asa Candler and the Adair brothers, who further developed infrastructure, parks, and streetcar access. Notable landmarks include the network of linked parks along Ponce de Leon Avenue and the distinctive historic homes built by prominent early 20th-century architects. Druid Hills remains one of Atlanta’s most picturesque, prestigious neighborhoods, blending natural beauty with architectural heritage and a committed long-term community.
