Neighborhood History

East Hyde Park takes its identity from its position east of the Illinois Central Railroad tracks that Paul Cornell, the New York lawyer who founded Hyde Park in 1853, deeded to the railroad in exchange for a passenger station. Cornell named the broader area after London's Hyde Park, and the elevated commuter tracks running the length of the lakefront still define East Hyde Park as a neighborhood distinct from Hyde Park proper today.

Unlike the low-rise homes west of the tracks, East Hyde Park filled in during the 1920s with architecturally significant high-rises, many originally built as hotels to serve visitors drawn by the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. The Metra Electric District still runs three stations through the area, and Promontory Point, a lakefront peninsula just steps from the neighborhood's front doors, remains one of the South Side's most-loved public spaces.
