East Peralta is an East Oakland neighborhood whose name draws on the Peralta family legacy — the original grantees of Rancho San Antonio, the Spanish land grant awarded to Sergeant Luis Manuel Peralta in 1820 that encompassed virtually all of what is now Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, and San Leandro. Established circa 1879 as Oakland expanded southward along the estuary, East Peralta's development was tied to the port activity, light manufacturing, and the diverse waves of immigrants drawn to working-class employment in the flatlands below the hills. The Peralta Hacienda Historical Park on 34th Avenue — the restored site of the Peralta family's adobe compound, operated as a museum and community park — is the most significant Mexican-era heritage site in the East Bay and the neighborhood's primary historic landmark. Union Point Park on the Oakland waterfront — a public park on the estuary managed by the Port of Oakland, offering bay views and access to the Oakland shoreline — serves as the neighborhood's waterfront anchor. Fruitvale Avenue and International Boulevard form the primary commercial and transit corridors connecting East Peralta to the broader Fruitvale District network.
