East Village takes its name from its position directly east of Ukrainian Village, a distinction so established that the area was once known simply as East Ukrainian Village. Like its neighbor, the land began as farmland settled by German immigrants after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, before Polish and Ukrainian immigrants arrived in force between 1880 and 1910, drawn in part by their familiarity with the Polish community already established nearby.

Construction of an elevated rail line along Paulina Street in 1895 spurred the neighborhood's early development, though the line itself was decommissioned in 1964. Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cathedral, designed by Louis Sullivan in 1903, still stands at the western edge of the neighborhood, one of the enduring architectural landmarks of Chicago's old Slavic Downtown, and Ashland Avenue continues to mark East Village's eastern boundary today.
