Eastmont is an East Oakland neighborhood developed circa 1926 whose name combines east — reflecting its position in the eastern flatlands — with mont, the French word for hill, marketing the area's modest elevation above the surrounding flatlands during Oakland's postwar suburban expansion. The neighborhood's working-class residential streets were built for the families who arrived with Oakland's industrial growth and have sustained a diverse, community-oriented character through successive generations of demographic change. Eastmont Town Center on 73rd Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard — the commercial complex that replaced the former Eastmont Mall — now serves as a hub for retail, health, and public services including an Oakland Police Department substation, making it one of the most programmatically dense community service centers in East Oakland. Verdese Carter Park on 77th Avenue — named for the longtime East Oakland community leader and City of Oakland employee Verdese Carter — is the neighborhood's primary green space and recreational anchor. International Boulevard runs along the southern edge as the primary transit and commercial corridor.
