Neighborhood History

Eden Green takes its name directly from the Eden Green Townhouses Cooperative, the housing development that gave this section of the Riverdale community area its identity. Built in the late 1960s, the cooperative's townhouse phase was, according to contemporary press coverage, a sell-out among Black homebuyers including teachers, postal workers, and construction employees seeking homeownership on Chicago's Far South Side.

The neighborhood's boundaries still trace back to that original development: bounded by the Canadian National railroad tracks to the west and the Calumet River to the south, with 130th Street marking its northern edge. Eden Green remains closely tied to its neighboring Riverdale communities, including Altgeld Gardens just to the north.
