Edenvale takes its name from the beauty and fertility of the land — a direct reference to the Garden of Eden that reflected the lushness of the Santa Clara Valley in the era before development. The area was once an independent community in the southern Santa Clara Valley, a stop along the historic Monterey Road — the original El Camino Real — connecting San José to the agricultural communities of South County.

The neighborhood's most enduring landmark is Hayes Mansion, a 1905 Mission Revival estate built by the Hayes family, who had acquired nearly 700 acres of Edenvale land for fruit orchards and general farming. Jay and Everis Hayes also purchased the San José Herald and Mercury newspapers in the early 1900s, with Everis going on to serve in the United States House of Representatives from 1905 to 1919. The mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The adjacent formal park, designed by landscape architect Rudolph Ulrich beginning in 1887, later became the site of Frontier Village, a popular amusement park that operated from 1961 to 1980; after it closed, San José purchased the remaining land in 1987 to create Edenvale Gardens Regional Park.
