Edgebrook takes its name from its setting along a wooded brook off the North Branch of the Chicago River, platted in 1894 by businessman and alderman Arthur Dixon in partnership with executives of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway. The earliest section, now known as Old Edgebrook, was built as a residential retreat for the railroad's own officials, and remains reachable by only two roads through the surrounding forest to this day.

That seclusion was intentional, and it's why the neighborhood still feels like it's miles from the city. The Old Edgebrook Historic District, just 48 homes representing architectural styles from the 1890s through the 1940s, was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1988. The neighborhood is ringed by the Edgebrook and Billy Caldwell golf courses, both operated by the Cook County Forest Preserves, and by Edgebrook Flatwoods, one of only two sites within Chicago's city limits recognized on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory for its native, unspoiled woodland.
