Edgewater Glen takes its name from Glenlake and Glenwood Avenues, the two streets intersecting near its center that gave the neighborhood's association its name when residents organized in 1972. The land had begun as farmland owned by Nicholas Kransz, whose Seven Mile House once stood at Ridge and Clark, before developers including Thomas Milsted, Brost and Kemper, and Edgewater's own founder John Lewis Cochran subdivided it into six additions between 1890 and 1904.

Most of Edgewater Glen's houses went up in a tight fifteen-year window, 1900 to 1915, a mix of American Foursquare, Prairie, Craftsman, and Queen Anne styles on wide, tree-lined lots. That consistency paid off: in December 2024, Edgewater Glen was added to the National Register of Historic Places, with state preservation officials noting it has one of the highest concentrations of original, unaltered buildings of any historic district in Illinois.
