Edison Park's first European settler, Christian Ebinger Sr., arrived in 1833 after his horse died from a rattlesnake bite 15 miles northwest of Chicago, close enough, he decided, to stop and settle. The surrounding village incorporated in 1881 as Canfield, and in 1890 its residents renamed it Edison Park in honor of Thomas Alva Edison, who gave his personal blessing to the name after the community became the first on Chicago's northwest side to receive electric service. Chicago annexed the village in 1910.

Ebinger's legacy is still written into the neighborhood today. Christian Ebinger Elementary School carries his name, and the frame church he helped found in 1894, now One Hope United Methodist Church, remains the neighborhood's oldest house of worship. Edison Park's namesake park, built around a 1907 schoolhouse designed by Solon Spencer Beman, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, and a boulder honoring Thomas Edison himself has stood in the park since 1979.
