Englewood traces its name to Henry B. Lewis, a Chicago merchant and Board of Education member who in 1868 proposed renaming the railroad junction known as Junction Grove after Englewood, New Jersey. Railroads had converged on the spot since 1852, and German and Irish immigrants working the rails and the nearby Union Stock Yard built the neighborhood's earliest homes. Junction Grove joined the Town of Lake in 1865, and Englewood was annexed to Chicago in 1889.

By the 1930s, nearly 90,000 people called Englewood home, and 63rd and Halsted had grown into the city's second-largest shopping district, anchored by a Sears department store. Hamilton Park and Sherman Park, both designed by the Olmsted Brothers of 1893 World's Fair fame, still anchor community recreation, and Kennedy-King College's Washburne Culinary Institute has trained chefs from its 63rd Street campus since 2007.

MY-NHD's Englewood collection is built for a community that has weathered decades of change and still shows up every September for its own jazz festival.
