Evergreen was originally part of Rancho Yerba Buena, a Mexican-era land grant awarded to Antonio Chaboya, a member of a prominent Californio family, by Governor José Figueroa in the 1830s. The Chaboya family's influence on the area is preserved in a cluster of place names throughout the district — Chaboya Road, Chaboya Park, and Chaboya Middle School among them. For much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the land was farmed, and the Mirassou family established a winery in what is now Evergreen Valley in 1854, making it one of the oldest continuously operated wine estates in California until the brand was acquired in 2003.

Evergreen gained a distinguished place in aviation history when John J. Montgomery conducted gliding experiments on the hillside now known as Montgomery Hill in 1911. Montgomery's most refined glider, named "The Evergreen" after the district, was among the most aerodynamically advanced designs of its era; the California State Historic Preservation Office designated Montgomery Hill as California Historical Landmark #813 in 1966, and the original glider was restored by the Smithsonian Institution. Residential development began in earnest under the 1980 Evergreen Specific Plan, which shaped the district's master-planned communities, pocket parks, and walkways.
