Evergreen Village is a community within the larger Evergreen district of East San José, itself part of the lands that once formed Rancho Yerba Buena, the Mexican-era land grant awarded to the Chaboya family by Governor José Figueroa in the 1830s. Like the surrounding Evergreen district, the area transitioned from agricultural use — orchards and vineyards, including those of the historic Mirassou Winery established in 1854 — to suburban residential development under the 1980 Evergreen Specific Plan, which guided the master-planned growth of East San José's southeastern foothills.

Evergreen Village Square, the community's commercial hub, was developed in the mid-2000s as a walkable neighborhood center built around a central plaza — an approach that distinguished it from conventional strip-mall development typical of the era. The plaza hosts a year-round farmers market, community events, and a branch of the San José Public Library, reinforcing its role as a civic anchor for the community. The surrounding neighborhood includes views of the Diablo Range and ready access to Montgomery Hill Park, named for aviation pioneer John J. Montgomery, who conducted gliding experiments on the adjacent hillside in 1911.
