Fernwood grew out of the same Dutch farming settlement that founded Roseland in the 1840s, when immigrant families cleared the high prairie west of Lake Calumet for row crops. The neighborhood took its name from Fernwood Parkway, a garden-like boulevard laid out between 95th and 103rd Streets along Eggleston Avenue, and the area developed as an affluent extension of Roseland before Chicago annexed the community.

Fernwood Park, the neighborhood's namesake green space, and the Griffith Natatorium, a beloved indoor swimming facility longtime residents still call "the Pump," anchored generations of community life here. Fernwood Methodist Church has served the congregation since the neighborhood's earliest years, its scrapbooks and records now preserved in the Chicago Public Library's Calumet Region Community Collection.
