Fruitvale is one of Oakland's most historically significant and culturally vibrant neighborhoods, its name drawn from the fruit orchards — apricot, peach, and cherry — that blanketed this section of the East Oakland flatlands when the area was subdivided from rancho lands in the 1850s. The Fruitvale Bridge over the Oakland-Alameda Estuary marks the neighborhood's southwestern boundary.
