The Fulton River District sits on ground first platted by surveyor James Thompson in 1830, centered on Wolf Point, the fork of the Chicago River where the city's first taverns, hotel, and ferry once stood. Commerce dominated the area for the century that followed: lumber and grain moved through its warehouses, Sears and Roebuck opened its first mail-order warehouse at Fulton and Des Plaines, and Randolph Street grew into the city's center for wholesale produce distribution.

By the 1990s, the district's emptied-out warehouses had become the unlikely home of Chicago's club scene, with venues like Shelter and China Club drawing crowds to a neighborhood most Chicagoans still considered gritty. Starting in the early 2000s, those same brick warehouses were converted into lofts and condominiums, and the neighborhood has grown into one of downtown's most established residential districts, still anchored by the Ogilvie Transportation Center, one of the city's busiest commuter rail terminals.
