Galewood takes its name from Abram Gale, a New York transplant who bought 320 acres of farmland here in 1838 and became one of the area's first European settlers. When the Chicago & Pacific Railway ran a line through his land around 1870, Gale sold the railroad a half interest in the property in exchange, and the subdivided farmland was christened Galewood in his honor.

The neighborhood grew slowly until a 1920s golf course was converted into home lots, sparking the Galewood Estates building boom of 1927 that gave the neighborhood its mix of Colonial, Tudor, and Spanish Revival homes. For nearly a century, Mars Incorporated's candy plant anchored the local economy and even had its own Metra stop, until the factory closed in 2024. Amundsen Park and the Rutherford Sayre Natural Area, with its historic fieldhouse and walking trails, still anchor community life today.
