Neighborhood History

Gladstone Park takes its name from British Prime Minister William Gladstone, honored somewhat improbably by the Gladstone Park Subdivision that appeared on developers' maps as early as 1891, decades before the neighborhood's actual park existed. German and later Volga German immigrants, fleeing pressure to abandon their language and culture in Russia's Volga River Valley, settled here starting in the 1890s, building the sturdy, gambrel-roofed Dutch Colonial homes that earned the neighborhood its nickname, "Little Rotterdam."

The Gladstone Park Community Club, formed by homeowners in the 1920s, successfully petitioned the Jefferson Park District for a public park, and (William) Gladstone Park finally opened in 1930 with a fieldhouse designed by Clarence Hatzfeld. The Gladstone Park Metra station, opened in 1920 on what's now the Union Pacific Northwest Line, gave residents a direct commute downtown, and the neighborhood still borders the historic Edgebrook Golf Course and the North Branch forest preserve trail system.

MY-NHD's Gladstone Park collection is built for a neighborhood so quietly distinct that most Chicagoans have never heard its name, and residents wouldn't have it any other way.
