Glen Park takes its name from the pleasuring grounds that gave the district its identity: "Glen Park," the private picnic and amusement destination developed by the Crocker Estate Company on land along Glen Canyon in the 1890s, which averaged 8,000 to 10,000 visitors each week at its peak and directly inspired the district's name. The land was originally part of Rancho San Miguel, granted to José de Jesús Noé in 1845, and by 1861 at least four dairy farms operated along Islais Creek in the future area of Glen Park. The first named streets were mapped in 1872 on land occupied by dairy farmer George Ulshofer as early as 1859. The neighborhood became known informally as "Little Switzerland" for its rugged, alpine-like terrain and the presence of Swiss-owned dairies.

The City of San Francisco acquired Glen Canyon from the Crocker Estate in 1922 and established the 66-acre Glen Canyon Park as a public recreation site, preserving the upper reach of Islais Creek — the largest watershed in San Francisco — which still flows above ground through the canyon, one of only two San Francisco creeks to do so. The Glen Park BART station, one of the deepest in the system, opened in 1973 and anchors the neighborhood's connection to the city. The Glen Park Neighborhood History Project documented that Glen Park women led what may have been America's first women's suffrage march in 1908, later recognized by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 2020.
