Golden Gate takes its name directly from Golden Gate Park, the modest green space that gives the neighborhood its outsized, San Francisco-echoing name. The surrounding subdivision was built starting in 1966 as part of a wave of new residential development in the Riverdale community area, part of the same generation of construction that gave the Far South Side neighboring Eden Green its start.

The Chicago Park District began planning Golden Gate Park in 1965 specifically to preserve recreational space as the surrounding subdivision took shape, purchasing the land in 1966 with help from federal Department of Housing and Urban Development funding. Bounded by the Calumet River to the south and the Union Pacific railroad tracks to the west, the neighborhood still sits near Kensington Marsh and the Little Calumet River, giving Golden Gate more green space than many of its Far South Side neighbors.
