Golden Gate Heights sits atop a north-south ridge of 140-million-year-old Franciscan chert — the ancient sedimentary rock formed from marine plankton that underlies much of San Francisco — rising above the Sunset District with winding streets, hidden stairways, and panoramic views of the ocean, bay, and Golden Gate. Until the 1920s, the ridge was largely undeveloped and surrounded by sand dunes. In 1924, Carl Larsen, a Danish immigrant who owned tracts of land in the Sunset District, donated much of what is now Golden Gate Heights to the City of San Francisco, enabling the establishment of the neighborhood's three hilltop parks. The area has carried multiple names — Sunset Heights, Golden Gate Heights — reflecting the neighborhood's position between the Sunset District below and the ridge above; the park at its northernmost peak, Grandview Park, is also known locally as Turtle Hill.

Grandview Park, with a summit at approximately 666 feet, preserves one of the last remaining habitats in San Francisco for the endangered Franciscan wallflower — a plant found only here and in southern Marin County across the Golden Gate. The neighborhood's 14 blocks of stairways and more than 2,500 stairs include the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps, completed in 2005, which have become one of San Francisco's most celebrated public art installations. The Green Hairstreak Corridor — eleven smaller open spaces maintained by Nature in the City — connects the neighborhood's three hilltop parks and supports a flyway for native butterflies and pollinators.
