Grand Crossing takes its grim name from an 1853 railroad disaster remembered as the "Frog War": Roswell B. Mason, an engineer who later became Chicago's mayor, secretly built Illinois Central tracks directly across the rival Lake Shore and Michigan Southern line, and the resulting collision killed 18 people in what's considered one of the nation's first railroad disasters. In its aftermath, every train was required to come to a complete stop at the crossing, and that mandatory pause turned an empty stretch of prairie into a natural stopping point for travelers and workers.

Developer Paul Cornell, who had already built Hyde Park to the north, began subdividing Grand Crossing through the 1870s, and the neighborhood grew into a working-class railroad suburb. The Metra Electric Line's 75th Street station still marks the exact site of the original crossing, and Grand Crossing Park and St. Mark United Methodist Church have anchored community life here across generations of change.
