Neighborhood History

Grass Valley is an Oakland Hills neighborhood whose name reflects the open grassland terrain that characterized the upper eastern slopes before residential development reached this part of the hills — a descriptive geographic name consistent with the pastoral naming conventions used across Oakland's hillside communities in the early 20th century. The neighborhood developed circa 1935 during the broader hillside suburban expansion that extended residential streets along Redwood Road and Mountain Boulevard, offering mid-century homes with access to the natural East Bay landscape. Skyline High School on Hillmont Drive — an Oakland Unified School District campus serving the upper Oakland hills communities since 1963 — is the neighborhood's most significant institutional anchor, one of the largest comprehensive high schools in the OUSD system. Redwood Regional Park borders the neighborhood to the east, one of the East Bay Regional Parks District's most significant natural preserves, protecting over 1,830 acres of second-growth redwood forest and connecting Grass Valley residents to the regional trail networks of the upper hills. That combination of natural access, hillside character, and community anchored by one of Oakland's landmark public high schools is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Grass Valley collection.
