Groveland Park takes its name from the subdivision Stephen A. Douglas, the Illinois senator and political rival of Abraham Lincoln, carved out of his 70-acre lakefront estate, Oakenwald, in the 1870s. Douglas's land had earlier hosted Camp Douglas, a Union training and prison camp during the Civil War, and after his death in 1861 his heirs subdivided much of the remaining estate into small residential developments, including Groveland Park and the neighboring Woodland Park.

Of all the sections Douglas's estate was carved into, Groveland Park is the only one that survives intact today, its homes still arranged around the same oval-shaped central park that gave the development its identity. Douglas's own tomb and monument stand nearby on 35th Street, on land he donated to the Old University of Chicago, and the neighborhood remains bounded by Cottage Grove Avenue, 33rd and 35th Streets, and the Metra Electric District tracks that have served the area for generations.
