Hamilton Park takes its name from its centerpiece park, opened in 1904 as the first of ten new neighborhood parks the South Park Commission built to bring green space and civic services into Chicago's crowded immigrant districts. Of those original ten, Hamilton was the only one named for a national political figure rather than a local one: Alexander Hamilton, George Washington's Treasury secretary, killed in his 1804 duel with Aaron Burr. Landscape architects the Olmsted Brothers, fresh off their work on the 1893 World's Fair, designed the grounds alongside Daniel H. Burnham and Company's fieldhouse.

That fieldhouse proved so popular it had to be expanded within two decades, and its Beaux-Arts interior still carries murals of American political history by artist John Warner Norton. The park earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, and it remains best known today for hosting the Englewood Jazz Festival every September, a tradition now well into its second decade.
