Hanson Park takes its name from the Hanson family, whose farm once occupied the 32 acres of land that would become the neighborhood's namesake park. The surrounding area developed as part of industrial Belmont Cragin in the late 19th century, drawing Swedish, German, and Irish workers to factories like Westinghouse, Church, Kerr and Company Iron Works, and Rice and Bullen Malting Company, with Polish and Italian immigrants following by the early 20th century.

Unlike most Chicago parks, Hanson Park was never part of the Chicago Park District; it's owned outright by Chicago Public Schools, and its grounds hold three school buildings, Hanson Park Elementary, Prosser Career Academy, and Prieto Math and Science Academy, along with Hanson Stadium, a CPS-operated venue that hosted the U.S. Open Cup final three times in the 1960s and '70s and even a season of professional soccer. The Metra Milwaukee District West Line's Hanson Park station, just steps away, still carries the family's name into the neighborhood's daily commute.
