Hawthorne is a residential neighborhood in East Oakland's Fruitvale district, developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries on land that was once part of the sprawling Peralta rancho. The neighborhood grew as Oakland expanded southward along the streetcar lines that connected the Fruitvale district to downtown, drawing working families who built the Craftsman bungalows and early twentieth-century homes that still characterize its tree-lined streets.

The neighborhood's most significant landmark is the Cohen Bray House at 1440 29th Avenue — a 17-room Stick-style Victorian built in 1882 as a wedding gift from Gold Rush merchant Watson Augustus Bray to his daughter Emma and her husband Alfred H. Cohen. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated an Oakland Landmark in 1975, the house remains in original condition with its Victorian interiors and garden intact, and is one of the few surviving grand estates from Oakland's nineteenth-century Fruitvale District.
