Hegenberger is an East Oakland neighborhood whose name honors Major General Albert Francis Hegenberger, a pioneering United States Air Force aviator who in 1927 completed the first transpacific flight to Hawaii as navigator of the Bird of Paradise — earning the Mackay Trophy for the achievement. The road bearing his name was built to connect the growing Oakland International Airport, which opened in 1927, to the city's freeway network, and the surrounding neighborhood developed around that corridor through the mid-twentieth century.

The neighborhood sits along 73rd Avenue — which becomes Hegenberger Road south of International Boulevard — and is defined by its proximity to the Oakland International Airport and the Oakland Coliseum.
