Hegewisch is named for Adolph Hegewisch, president of the U.S. Rolling Stock Company, who in 1883 laid out a planned company town along a rail line on Chicago's far south side with the express ambition of creating what he called an ideal workingman's community. The town was annexed by Chicago six years later in 1889. Hegewisch's early economy was built on heavy industry — steel mills and rail car manufacturing dominated employment through the early twentieth century, with the neighborhood absorbing successive waves of Polish, German, Greek, and later Mexican and Latino families who came for the industrial work. Its geographic position — bounded by wetlands, rail corridors, and the Indiana state line — gave it a degree of isolation that shaped its character as a self-contained working-class community unlike any other in the city.

Wolf Lake, located within the William W. Powers State Recreation Area, anchors Hegewisch's natural landscape and remains one of the most significant freshwater habitats on Chicago's far southeast side. The South Shore Line commuter rail stop at Hegewisch Station — the last stop in Illinois before crossing into Indiana — connects the neighborhood to the Loop and to South Bend, Indiana, and stands as a daily reminder of the rail heritage on which the community was founded.
