Hermosa takes its name from the Spanish word for "beautiful," chosen when the area was annexed to Chicago as part of Jefferson Township in 1889. German, Scandinavian, and Scottish railroad workers were among the first to settle here in the 1880s, drawn by a location surrounded on three sides by rail lines that made it a natural fit for industry. In 1893, carpenter Elias Disney built a modest cottage at Tripp Avenue and Palmer Street for his family; his son Walt was born there in 1901.

The Schwinn Bicycle Company built its headquarters in Hermosa around the turn of the century and remained one of the neighborhood's largest employers until the mid-1980s, at one point becoming one of the country's leading bicycle manufacturers. The Hermosa Bungalow Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018, preserves 298 bungalows along with brick two-flats and apartment buildings from the neighborhood's early 20th-century building boom, and Kelvyn Park still anchors community life at the neighborhood's western edge.
