Neighborhood History
Highland Park is one of Oakland's oldest residential neighborhoods, its elevated streets and panoramic Bay views drawing middle-class families to its mix of Victorian, Craftsman, and Mediterranean Revival homes from its founding circa 1890. The neighborhood occupies a prominent ridge above the East Oakland flatlands, its elevated position giving both its name and its character — a community defined by the quality of its period architecture and the long views it offers across the city below. Highland Hospital on Foothill Boulevard — operated by Alameda County as a public safety-net hospital serving East Bay communities since 1927 — is the neighborhood's most significant institutional anchor and one of the busiest Level II trauma centers in the East Bay. Highland Park itself provides the primary community green space, while the Foothill Boulevard corridor connects the neighborhood to the broader East Oakland commercial and transit network. International Boulevard runs along the lower slopes as the area's primary transit artery. That layered history — Victorian origins, institutional anchor, and a community sustained by its architectural pride — is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Highland Park collection.
