Highland Terrace is a residential neighborhood in the East Oakland hills, its name reflecting the terrace-like topography of the hillside streets that step up from the flatlands below. Mountain View Cemetery — designed in 1863 by Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect of New York's Central Park, and one of California's most historically significant designed landscapes — borders the neighborhood to the north, its 226 acres of sculpted grounds serving as both a historic landmark and a quiet green presence at the edge of the residential streets. The Chapel of the Chimes on Piedmont Avenue — a columbarium and funeral chapel designed by Julia Morgan in 1928, California's first licensed female architect — lies adjacent, adding a second landmark of national architectural significance to the neighborhood's edge.
