Hiller Highlands takes its name from the Hiller family — most credibly associated with Stanley Hiller Jr., the pioneering Oakland-born helicopter engineer and industrialist whose Hiller Aircraft Company was a major East Bay enterprise — whose name was applied to the hillside subdivision developed in 1963 as part of the postwar demand for planned residential communities in the upper Oakland hills. Built along Grizzly Peak Boulevard and the ridge roads above the Montclair district, the neighborhood offered well-designed single-family homes with panoramic views toward San Francisco Bay at a time when the East Bay hills were among the most sought-after residential locations in the region. Redwood Regional Park and Joaquin Miller Park border the neighborhood, connecting Hiller Highlands residents to the East Bay Regional Parks District trail network — one of the most extensive urban-adjacent park systems in the United States. Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve lies to the north along Skyline Boulevard, providing additional access to the ridge trail system.
