Hillview is a residential neighborhood in East San José, developed primarily between the 1940s and 1960s as San José expanded its footprint across the Santa Clara Valley under the aggressive annexation policy of City Manager A.P. "Dutch" Hamann. The neighborhood takes its name from Hillview Park, the central green space that anchors the community, whose elevated setting offers views of the surrounding East San José foothills — a landscape shaped by the same agricultural patterns that defined the valley before suburbanization arrived.

Hillview's location in East San José places it within a corridor of communities with deep Hispanic and Asian roots, and the neighborhood reflects the layered immigration history that has characterized East San José since the mid-twentieth century. Emma Prusch Farm Park, located nearby, preserves a 47-acre working farm that operated as an active dairy and orchard through much of the twentieth century and now serves as a living reminder of the agricultural past that Hillview and its surrounding neighborhoods replaced. Hillview Park itself remains the community's civic anchor, home to the Hank Lopez Community Center and the park's recreational facilities.
