Neighborhood History

Horner Park takes its name from Henry Horner, Illinois' first Jewish governor, who served from 1933 to 1940 after building a reputation for integrity as a Cook County probate judge. The land itself started out very differently: a brick manufacturer excavated the riverside property for clay in the early 1900s, then abandoned the pits once the clay was exhausted, and the site became an illegal garbage dump until community opposition got it down-zoned.

The Chicago Park District began acquiring the nearly 55-acre site in 1946 as part of a ten-year, citywide plan to bring more recreational space to Chicago neighborhoods. A red granite monument honoring Governor Horner, carved by sculptor John David Brcin in 1948, originally stood in Grant Park before it was moved here in 1956 to mark the new fieldhouse's dedication. Today Horner Park is one of the largest parks on the North Side, its fields and trails tracing the North Branch of the Chicago River.
