Hunters Point, in the southeastern corner of San Francisco, takes its name from the Hunter brothers — John, Phillip, and Robert — who built homes and a dairy farm on the land after Rancho Rincon de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo was sold following the California Gold Rush. The area's deep-water cove made it ideal for shipbuilding, and the first permanent dry dock on the Pacific Coast was established here in 1869. By the early twentieth century the site had become one of the largest shipyards on the West Coast, operated by Union Iron Works and later Bethlehem Steel. In 1940, the U.S. Navy purchased the property and named it the San Francisco Naval Shipyard; at its World War II peak it employed more than 18,000 workers, including thousands of African Americans recruited from the South as part of the Great Migration. On July 15, 1945, components of the atomic bomb 'Little Boy' were loaded aboard the USS Indianapolis at Hunters Point for transfer to Tinian.

The Navy closed the shipyard in 1974 and decommissioned it in 1991, leaving Hunters Point with a significant environmental legacy: the site was designated an EPA Superfund site in 1989. The historic Gantry Crane, built in 1947 by U.S. Steel's American Bridge Company and rising 160 feet above the waterline, remains a prominent visual landmark. Since 1983, the Hunters Point Shipyard Artists — the largest artist colony in the United States — have operated studios in the former naval buildings.
