India Basin, San Francisco's easternmost neighborhood, takes its name from the protected cove between Islais Creek and the Hunters Point peninsula. The name first appeared on an 1868 map drawn by the California State Board of Tide Land Commissioners; the most widely accepted theory traces it to the ships of the India Rice Mill Company that docked in the cove during the nineteenth century. The land was part of the 4,446-acre Rancho Rincon de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo granted to José Cornelio Bernal in 1839. By the 1860s, the completion of the Long Bridge over Mission Cove connected India Basin to central San Francisco and opened the area to industrial development. Slaughterhouses operating as 'Butchertown' filled the cove's southern shores by 1871, and Chinese immigrant families established a thriving shrimp-fishing industry along the shoreline until the Navy burned their camps and docks in 1938 to clear land for the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.

In 1870, John Hamlin Burnell built the Albion Ale and Porter Brewing Company at 881 Innes Avenue using stone that may have been recycled from ships' ballast — the Albion Castle, as it came to be known, is San Francisco Landmark #60. The Shipwright's Cottage at 900 Innes, built circa 1875 by Dutch carpenter Jan Dirks, is San Francisco Landmark #250 and anchors the new India Basin Shoreline Park waterfront area.
