Neighborhood History
Ingleside, in San Francisco's southwestern quadrant, takes its name from the Ingleside Inn, a roadhouse opened in the 1870s by Cornelius Stagg on the southeast corner of what is now Ocean Avenue and Junipero Serra Boulevard. Stagg's establishment, which offered food, drink, and a card game or two, was well-known enough that 'Ingleside' became common usage for the surrounding area by the 1880s, when Ocean Avenue was still a dirt path leading to Lake Merced and the roadhouses dotting its banks. The name was cemented in 1895 with the opening of the Ingleside Racetrack — the last horse racing venue in San Francisco — on the site that is now Ingleside Terraces, directly adjacent to the neighborhood. Early development came through the 1862 San Miguel City platting on the east and the 1890 Lakeview subdivision on the west, but both remained sparse until the 1906 earthquake drove residents westward.
In 1934, the former Ingleside jail on Ocean Avenue was converted into City College of San Francisco, which became one of the neighborhood's defining civic institutions. The El Rey Theatre, designed by architect Timothy Pflueger and opened in 1931, anchors Ocean Avenue's commercial corridor and is a neighborhood landmark. The Ingleside Branch Library and the Balboa Park BART station at the neighborhood's eastern edge serve the diverse community that has made Ingleside one of San Francisco's most multicultural districts.
Ingleside's origins in roadhouse culture and horse racing, and its evolution into a working-class residential neighborhood, are woven into every MY-NHD piece that carries its name.
