Neighborhood History

Ingleside Terraces is a planned residential neighborhood of approximately 750 detached homes built on the site of the former Ingleside Racetrack, San Francisco's last horse racing venue. The racetrack opened on November 28, 1895, when the Pacific Coast Jockey Club constructed the track just off Ocean Road to draw eight thousand spectators on opening day. After racing ceased, the Urban Realty Improvement Company announced the neighborhood in November 1911 and received its first resident in June 1912. The development was bounded by Junipero Serra Boulevard, Ocean Avenue, Holloway Avenue, and Ashton Avenue, and built out with curvilinear streets, Mediterranean-style homes, and the architectural signature of its Garden City aspirations. Urbano Drive, the neighborhood's central oval street, traces the exact loop of the old racetrack and remains one of San Francisco's most distinctive residential features.

At the center of Urbano Drive stands the Ingleside Terraces Sundial, a 28-foot-tall concrete sundial constructed in 1913 and designated San Francisco Landmark #213. The 1922 Ingleside Presbyterian Church, designed by Joseph A. Leonard, is San Francisco Landmark designation #516. The Cecil F. Poole House, where in 1958 a cross was burned on the lawn of the first African American resident of the neighborhood — then an assistant district attorney — is San Francisco Landmark #248, recognized for its role in San Francisco's civil rights history.

From horse racing oval to landmark-studded garden suburb, Ingleside Terraces carries a layered San Francisco history that MY-NHD apparel honors.
