Neighborhood History

Irving Woods took shape within the larger Dunning community area on Chicago's far northwest side, bordered by the Indian Boundary Golf Course and the Schiller Woods Forest Preserve. Like its Dunning neighbors Schorsch Village, Belmont Heights, and Belmont Terrace, the area saw its main wave of residential growth during a revival of institutional, commercial, and residential development in the 1980s and 1990s.

The neighborhood's brick bungalows and American foursquares, most built in the postwar decades, sit surrounded by more green space than almost anywhere else in the city, with hiking trails through Schiller Woods running to the edge of the Des Plaines River. That proximity to undeveloped forest, unusual for a Chicago neighborhood, has defined Irving Woods' character since its earliest residents moved in.
