Ivy Hill is a small residential neighborhood in the hills of East Oakland, its name evoking the ivy and mixed woodland that covered the hillside terrain before development reached this part of the city circa 1882. The neighborhood occupies the slopes above the Dimond District along a section of the eastern hills that connects the flatland residential grid to the open space corridors of the upper Oakland hills. Dimond Park — one of Oakland's major community parks, situated at the base of the Ivy Hill slopes along Fruitvale Avenue — serves as the neighborhood's primary recreational anchor, offering sports fields, a community center, and creek-side open space along Sausal Creek. Sausal Creek runs along the neighborhood's lower edge as part of the City of Oakland-designated urban creek restoration corridor managed in partnership with the Sausal Creek Watershed group. The quiet hillside character of Ivy Hill — modest streets set back from the flatland bustle below — has defined the neighborhood across its long residential history.
