Jackowo takes its name from St. Hyacinth Basilica, Bazylika Św. Jacka, the Polish Roman Catholic parish whose name (Jacka, or Hyacinth) plus the Polish suffix -owo, meaning village, gave this stretch of Milwaukee Avenue its identity. Polish immigrants began settling here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, moving northwest along the same corridor that had already filled Chicago's earlier Polish enclaves, and the neighborhood swelled further after World War II with immigrants displaced by the war and by Poland's new communist government.

Jackowo's importance grew again in the 1980s, when Polish refugees fleeing the Solidarity-era crackdown found a welcoming community here, and St. Hyacinth's itself became a hub for Solidarity organizing, hosting newly elected Polish President Lech Wałęsa for Palm Sunday Mass in 1991. A block over, St. Wenceslaus Church anchors the neighboring Wacławowo patch, and a 1975 mural titled "Razem" ("Together"), painted by Caryl Yasko with funding from the Polish American Congress, still stands near Belmont and Pulaski as a reminder of that era's cultural flowering.
