Jackson Heights takes its name from Jackson Avenue — now largely absorbed into Northern Boulevard — which once marked the northern edge of a large tract purchased by the Queensboro Corporation starting in 1909. Beginning in the early 1910s, the company built one of the country's first planned "garden apartment" communities, arranging entire city blocks as single units of design rather than individual lots, with early rowhouses on 83rd Street giving way to landmark apartment complexes as the elevated subway reached the area in 1917 and drew middle-class families from Manhattan.

Much of that original planning survives intact: the Jackson Heights Historic District, designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1993, and Laurel Court, the neighborhood's first apartment complex built in 1913-14 at the corner of Northern Boulevard and 82nd Street, both stand as direct legacies of the Queensboro Corporation's original design.
